CANOE WOLF RIVER!

This past Saturday, the staff and interns had the day off for a canoe trip down the Wolf River. We departed for our trip Saturday morning at 11. Eight hours, 2 lightning storms and almost 17 miles later, our trip finally came to an end. We were supposed to go 4.5 miles in a couple of hours, but little did we know that the first bridge we would pass under was actually the 'second bridge,' where our journey should have ended. We knew something was up when we passed under I-10 and we were closer to the Gulf of Mexico than we had originally intended.

So I'm new

Hi my name is Sarah Denton, and I am the newest Lagniappe staff member. I am from Fort Worth Texas, but I just graduated from Furman University in Greenville South Carolina and moved to Bay St. Louis Mississippi! I'm in the process of creating my official job, but the main idea is recruiting support: teams, prayer, and finances. I am in over my head, but incredibly blessed to be here!!!! I was an intern last summer and worked in the tool crib, and then worked the tool crib again for the months of February and March. I have been incredibly blessed by the staff here, and I have been drawn by the Gospel at work here. I love this place more than I ever imagined; a year ago today I never would have told you I would live anywhere near Mississippi. I am a mountain girl, with no construction skills, but God has a way of putting me in these positions to remind me of my need for Him. I am thrilled to be here, and hope to meet ya'll if you come down!!! Or maybe I'll see you on my recruitment travels. Till then, I covet your prayers for a combination of diligence and trust as we put this job together!!! This is me learning to trade steak for sea food, I'm learning to love the coast!!!

Silly rain can't stop us

Throughout this week I have been out at the Russo site working with kids and adults from the Group WorkCamp crew. This shot was taken at the end of the day after all the work was done and cleanup commenced. Monday began the fun where we all got down and dirty in the trenches and holes ripping out rebar, and scooping out water, muck and fire ants. Tuesday the work continued and was less messy because the land had had more time to dry up. Wednesday is when the site transformed into a motocross mud pit into a plot of land suitable for a foundation. Jordan accompanied me out on the site Wednesday morning as the teams continued to bring the land to grade and even out trenches. Jordan and I worked with some of the kids to put together the rebar cages comprised of four four foot rebars in a square column. This cage serves as a support around which block are placed and then concrete poured into. In the pm of the day Andrew, Ryn and I finished building the cages, got the grade stakes ready and situated the cages into each of the 28 holes. The holes will each have a pillar to support the house. This morning I met with the inspector who gave us the go ahead to pour the footers in the holes enabling us to then begin the process of laying block. With the teams eager to work in the afternoon, Jordan, Andrew, Ryn and myself led the teams to victory... Our team operated like a mailman- rain, sleet, hail or snow, the concrete must come in... I mean a wet and messy good time. This is an action shot of the site when about 1/2 of the holes are poured. The concrete truck was scheduled to come at 1:30- it came at 2. So what else should happen during this time then a nice wet rainstorm soaking us all head to toe. This fun was then followed by the truck arriving and the mud getting muddier, and then fun getting funnier. What I mean is- the teamwork I saw out on this site was amazing. When people would get exhausted from moving wheelbarrows full of concrete- others immediately jumped in. Here is Jordan trucking along with a wheelbarrow. This hole was already poured with concrete but it is hard to see this because of the large amount of rainwater in the hole. Andrew left his mark with a new family pet for the Russo's- a concrete turtle.

Semper Fi and God Speed

Lagniappe is losing a dear friend. James Belonzi is a summer construction intern here at Lagniappe. He is a member of Army National Guard and he wishes to become a chaplain for the military. We are sad because he has to report to the National Guard so he is leaving to spend some time with his family before he reports. We are sad because we no longer able to enjoy time and fellowship with him. But we know that he must go, so we must forget our own selfishness. James has made a commitment to the US military and to God that he would work in faithful service preaching His Holy Word to those in the military. All of us here at Lagniappe will feel the loss of our dear friend, but we know that he is being called somewhere else and that his time here has come an end. Verses 4, 5, and 6 of the Battle Hymn of the Republic "He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat: Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on. Chorus. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on. Chorus. He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave, So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave, Our God is marching on. Chorus." So to our dear friend James, may you always sound forth the trumpet of the truth and love of God. May you always show the beauty of Christ, and how He died to make men holy. Our God is marching on and may you march on with Him. From Zephaniah 3 verse 17 “The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” So to our dear friend James, Semper Fi and God Speed! Soli Deo Gloria! James Belonzi
